Migration changes favour employers – unemployment drops to 5.3%

The Department of Immigration announced major changes to the nations migration programme to focus on highly skilled professionals. With the unemployment rate dropping like a rock to 5.3% this is just what Australia needs to head off the impending skills crisis.

Having listened to the states and employers, Immigration Minister Chris Evans announced this week that the current Occupations In Demand list would be scrapped immediately and lesser-skilled occupations that are no longer in high demand would be removed. Leaving the list to focus on higher-skilled ones such as engineers, mining and healthcare workers.

“This is designed to make sure that we get the right people to meet the economy's needs'' Mr Evans said. He went on to explain that the programme's goal is focused on
“connecting employers to the global labour market where skills cannot be sourced locally”.

Under the new scheme the government will continue to give top priority to employers who want to sponsor individual migrants.

"Demand in many critical skills areas has not diminished and businesses are looking at the prospect of the re-emergence of acute skill shortages as the economy recovers. It will also help in the longer term to address the demographic pressures of our ageing population”
